"My Mom's My First Fan"

The NFL Draft is about to hit Detroit like a powerhouse in the spring of 2024, unleashing a surge of energy that fuses the worlds of business and sports entertainment. Right at the epicenter of this powerhouse is none other than Detroit itself—a city defined by grit, resilience, and the unyielding blue-collar attitude that pulsates through its veins.

Football resonates with the very spirit of Metro-Detroit and the State of Michigan—a spirit marked by toughness, tenacity, and heart. Detroit, boasting a population of over 75% Black residents, stands tall as a symbol of triumph over realities that can be tragic and downright disheartening. The Legacy of Black Detroit, entrenched in families that have been here for generations, forms the bedrock of the city’s culture—an indispensable force that cannot be ignored.

A question that resonates with many in Detroit is:

“How will the NFL Draft impact the Detroit community?”

“My Mom’s My First Fan” is a compelling response to this inquiry.

In collaboration with Visit Detroit

Detroit is Different presents this innovative event designed to spotlight the journeys of NFL Mothers through the art of storytelling. The primary audience for this occasion comprises the mothers of players involved in over 80 Little League Football Associations across Metro Detroit and more than 150 high school football programs.

Visit Detroit stands out as the singular organization dedicated to promoting the metro Detroit region on regional, national, and international levels as a hub for conventions, business meetings, and tourism. To pursue this objective, Visit Detroit collaborates with the regional Detroit and Windsor area business community, civic organizations, and local government offices in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, actively contributing to the area’s second-largest industry.

Established in 2014, Detroit is Different, under the leadership of founder Khary Frazier (Walsh College BA/MA in Marketing), serves as a platform for storytelling and community engagement. The platform features prominent figures such as 2023 TedxDetroit Presenter Comedian T Barb and Vogue/Elle Photographer & Women in Hip-hop advocate Piper Carter. Beyond its digital presence, Detroit is Different organizes events such as the Collard Green Cook-Off and the My Natural Hair Show. The Detroit is Different Experience aims to illuminate culture, creativity, and community through various multimedia channels, including video, podcasts, photography, graphic design, and animation.

This isn’t just about the NFL Draft—it’s about celebrating the essence of Detroit, a city that doesn’t just endure; it thrives.

So, as we prepare for the NFL Draft to descend upon us, let’s not just witness it; let’s own it. Let’s amplify the voices that have weathered storms, conquered challenges, and forged a legacy that demands recognition through the team that makes up our community, the family. We want to offer a special event where we honor the Real MVP of the Black Family, the matriarch.

In collaboration with Visit Detroit

“My Mom’s My First Fan” is a distinctive narrative that starkly contrasts the prevailing ‘Blindside’ (2009 film) perspective often associated with NFL athletes. Rather than perpetuating the story of broken and destitute families relying on others to foster success, we aim to spotlight the Mothers who, with unwavering strength, manage team fundraisers, oversee training, and balance households with siblings of athletes ascending to professional stardom.

Live Event

The in-person event will host a resource fair for mothers of football players, featuring the forum discussion with pro football players’ mothers. Resources include the Umoja Debate Team (Umoja Debate League is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that uses debate as our vehicle to teach Detroit youth ages 11-18 transferable life skills, such as critical thinking, confidence, conflict resolution, increased literacy, and self-expression), mentoring from Building Black Brick Masters (Building Black Brick Masters, a grassroots group consisting of over 15 Detroit men representing multiple generations that are committed to helping boys and young men in Detroit live productive lives), and nutritional support from the Grub Bank (the Grubbank offers organic vegan meals, daily fresh salads to go, meal prep consultations and refrigerator and pantry organization services) led by Nedra Banks.
